Volunteer Spotlight: Adam Heineman

Adam Heineman thought he’d spend his career in construction. Instead, one decision to join his local fire company led him down a different path filled with purpose, training and life-saving work.

At 21, Heineman works as an EMT for Life Team EMS in Harrisburg while also volunteering as a firefighter with Rescue Fire Company. It all started when he checked out the company’s website and saw they were seeking new members.

“I grew up in the area and always knew about Rescue,” Heineman said. “It was something I’d always wanted to do. I finally took the step and joined.”

Heineman signed up in January 2023 and quickly found that volunteering gave him more than he expected. At the time, he was working in construction and had no certifications in emergency services. But after joining Rescue, he discovered a passion for the fire and EMS world. The experience motivated him to pursue formal training, earn certifications and begin a career as a professional EMT.

“I thought I was going to be in construction my whole life,” he said. “Joining Rescue changed everything. I’m a lot happier now, and I’ve built a résumé I’m proud of.”

Rescue Fire Company’s call volume is as diverse as the area it covers. The team responds to townhouse fires, barn fires, mountain rescues, and water emergencies along the river. But for Heineman, not every memorable moment involves lights and sirens.

“Some of my favorite calls are the ones where I just talk with people who are unaware of a current situation regarding faulty detectors inside of their homes,” he said. “They might be scared because of a carbon monoxide alarm, and I get to explain things and help them feel safe. That means a lot.”

He encourages others to consider joining, regardless of their background or career path.

“You really are doing a public service,” he said. “And personally, it’s changed my life. A year and a half ago, I didn’t have a single certification. Now I work full time in EMS.”

Rescue Fire Company is one of 21 fire companies across the East Shore, West Shore and Capital Region included in the Capital Region Firefighter Recruitment grant. No experience is required to join. All training and gear are provided at no cost.

“There are so many ways to help,” Heineman said. “Volunteering changed my life, and it might change yours too.”
