Women’s History Month Volunteer Spotlight: Shelby Davis

Two years ago, eager to follow in the footsteps of her father and help those in need, Shelby Davis joined the New Kingstown Fire Company. She is currently in the process of obtaining her Firefighter 1 Certification.

“My favorite part about volunteering is how family-oriented the fire company is, and helping people in need when an emergency arises,” said Davis.

Davis encourages other women interested in becoming volunteer firefighters to give it a try. While it may seem intimidating, to take the leap and become a volunteer firefighter, the welcoming and friendly atmosphere within the fire department allows all members to learn life-saving skills and achieve their personal goals.

“Don’t be afraid of joining or coming into this industry as a woman thinking you can’t do it because you don’t know anyone or know anything,” said Davis. “You can do it, you just have to take that step.”

The New Kingstown Fire Company is one of 21 fire companies included in the Capital Region Firefighter volunteer recruitment campaign. If you want to serve your community and make a difference, there’s likely a nearby fire company and a position for you based on your interest, skills and availability. All training and gear are provided at no cost.
